A Perfect Day

About 2 weeks ago I received an offer from Goldstar for discounted tickets to ABT's season at Lincoln Center. I started having Wednesdays off (a change I am planning on keeping) and decided I should treat myself to a day at the ballet. I love the Metroploitan Opera House with all it's elegance and beauty; it's truly a captivating space. With all the stress I've been dealing with I was ready for a mental health day. All I can say is that Wednesday was the PERFECT day.

I woke up early and made a green smoothie to start the day (see recipe below). Nothing gets me going better in the morning and it really makes me feel good. I quickly ran to the store to pick up a few items I needed for my allergy testing the next day (results coming in the next post) and came home to take a nice hot shower.

After packing my bag for the day with some essential snacks and a good book to read, I was off on the express bus to make my way to Lincoln Center to pick up my tickets. While the show started at 2, I planned on getting uptown by noon so I could have time to go out for a delicious lunch. When I arrived the plaza was beaming with sunshine and warmth. I grabbed my ticket and headed up 20 blocks to PeaceFood Cafe.

This was my first time dining at PeaceFood and as someone who needs to be gluten free and dairy free I had plenty of options. PeaceFood is a vegan restaurant that also has a lot of gluten free menu items. Now they do have a few items marked almost gluten free, so if you have a sensitivity or celiac disease just stay away from those items as they are NOT gluten free. (Sorry but almost doesn't count). My waitress was very receptive to my special dining needs and I felt really safe eating there. I had a yummy 4 veggie dish with quinoa and an iced peppermint tea that was to DIE for. Seriously this tea perked me up and gave me a refreshed hydrating feeling. It was so good I also got one to go! The atmosphere was perfect for a solo lunch and is very serene and relaxing. The waitstaff is attentive, but not intrusive. It was truly a peaceful, enjoyable lunch.

I headed back to Lincoln Center and waited outside in the sunshine for the house to open. It was an absolutely gorgeous day!  I let the sun warm my face and just enjoyed the view. When the time came to enter the opera house I was so excited! I was very pleased with my seat and view. My favorite pre-show event? The raising of the chandelier lights, it's so fun to see them fly!

ABT's performance of Don Quixote was impeccable. I absolutely love the story ballets and ithis production was no exception. I sat on the edge of my seat the whole 2 & 1/2 hour show and felt like a kid again. It was wonderful! (Not mention I got to see "Charlie" from Center Stage perform).

I made great time coming home and had plenty of time to get to m yoga class. My current teacher is blessed with wonderful healing energy and I always feel amazing after class. It was truly the perfect ending to a perfect day :-)

New Beginnings and Gluten Free/Body Ecology Chocolate Chip Cookies!

Can you believe it's September? I personally love the summer, its a great time to hit the reset button. September to me represents new beginnings and chances to start over. I'm excited for what's ahead this coming dance season; I'm ready to take the bull by the horns and have one of my most successful years creatively and career-wise. Something about the September air truly inspires my inner dreamer and I'm encouraged to believe anything is possible. It's so exciting!

To continue my journey on the year of my best self, I'm beginning to delve into mind-body connection and it's relationship to health. I've started reading Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself by Lissa Rankin, MD. I'm about a third of the way into the book and I feel like I'm learning so much already. Constant stress, overexertion, self doubt, and negative thoughts set off flight or fight responses in your body which in turn causes your body to be in a…

Healing through Grief

It's been a long time since I've written. A lot of that had to do with a very busy work schedule and some new business ventures. I am so grateful for all the positive feedback I've gotten recently about this blog and I was reminded how much this blog helped me when I was struggling with my health. 4 years later I am finding myself in a place where I feel like I need to go back to my roots and start over.

2016 was a whirlwind of a year. January brought the unexpected surprise of a full-time teaching position at Monmouth University. I was so excited about getting to teach dance full-time at the college level but because it was such an unexpected surprise I was still teaching for 2 private studios 10 hours a week and I was in the process of launching a new lifestyle program for dancers. Talk about  a lot going on! While I stayed true to the BED principles, I had let some sugar creep back into my life and honestly all the stress I was feeling made me crave it more. Once summer…

What on Earth is there for you to eat? A Recipe Roundup

As I mentioned in my last post, I've recently discovered I have more food allergies. So now in addition to being gluten free and dairy free, I am also egg free, fennel free, and coconut free (however coconut oil tested fine with no reaction whatsoever). I also had a reaction to powdered stevia; the liquid one was fine and I will be reworking all my baked goods recipes using just liquid stevia (a future blog post). The reaction I get when friends and family find out is, "What do you eat? It must be so terrible!" If I were in their shoes and had no personal experience with food allergies and sensitivities I might have the same reaction. However, I actually feel calmer and less stressed. Honestly there's so much good food I can eat safely.  I feel so relieved to know what has been making me feel sick and covered in itchy eczema lately. It's no fun dealing with digestive system issues, headaches, and feeling self conscious about your skin.

So what exactly do I eat? L…
